英语格言(二)
6．Little by little and by bit by bit.
一星半星，聚两成斤。
▲ 此语劝人做事要有恒心和毅力，不要因工作繁重而沮丧。相似谚语有“Constant dripping wears away the stone ”（滴水穿石），“Little strokes fell great oaks ”（滴水穿石，）“Slow but sure wins the race ”（慢而稳，赛中胜）。Little by little 和 bit by bit 均为“逐渐地”。
7．Little things please little minds .
小事满足小志者。
▲ 这句谚语意为智慧有限者只对微不足道的琐事感兴趣。与此相反的谚语有“Hitch your wagon to a star”（要怀有雄心壮志；把你的车拴在一颗星上）。
8．Mind your own business.
别管他事。
▲ 或者说“管你自己的事！”这是对人的劝诫语。收集在17世纪中叶的金言集里。相当于我国的“个人自扫门前雪，莫管他人瓦上霜”。
9．The exception proves the rule.
例外能证明规则。
因为“Every rule has its exception ”（一切规则皆有例外），例外的存在是规则的先决条件，由例外的特性更能显示出规则的规律性。exception/ik‵sep n/n.例外; 除外.
10．The wine in the bottle does not quench thirst.
瓶中酒不解渴。
▲ 这句话最早于乔治?赫伯特（George Herbert ）所编的“格言集”（Outlandish Proverbs, 1640）.意思是所得到的并不能解决实际问题。中国有类似的说法：“画上的饼不充饥”。
